I want the nicest i can for the money if you know a good place to get one please let me know. How much should I expect to pay for a quality Barber Head Half?
Your question is too open ended. What you think is a quality Barber 1/2 and what I think maybe two different stories. A mint state Barber 1/2 in say MS-64 is going to set you back around $1,400 for a common date. To some that is a quality coin. It is more than I would want to pay, so I would go looking for a grade of AU-58 which is around $350. That may be too much for some so for an extra fine $125-$175. Buying coins on line in not a wise thing to do if one has little experience in grading and going by a grading service is not always wise either. Go to some coin dealers so you can see the coins. Look for a well struck, uncleaned, undamaged coin. Under graded coins are out there but you have to go get them, too many people thing on line buying is the key. Numismatics is still in the stone age, we use books and grading guides and don't always believe the grading services are correct. To really find the good stuff one has to get off their butt and do some leg work. Learn all you can about a series and make sure you know more than the dealer does about what you want, without letting him know you know more than he does.
