I'm going to see The Barber of Seville tomorrow at the Lyric Opera in Chicago. What do I wear? And my boyfriend? Should I dress glam? He in a suit? What do I wear to see The Barber of Seville Opera?
I must admit that I'm sort of allergic to the all-casual all-the-time culture that's evolved in America and northern Europe. In the days of the great composers, people dressed up to go out--even to go to dinner. If you look at photos of Puccini or Strauss (or Rossini), they're always dressed very nicely, because that's how ';respectable people'; dressed back then.
Of course you CAN go dressed in jeans. You won't be arrested or kicked out. But doesn't the picture of you and your boyfriend dressed in your finest going into a beautiful opera house to hear a great opera make a wonderful picture? Be part of the culture of beauty--dress up! Rossini made his contribution to it, so did the architecht of the opera house. Make your small contribution in honor of them! What do I wear to see The Barber of Seville Opera?
tell him to grow a beard and if he can't by then dress like formal like suit and tie otherwise a nice dress is fine, you can never dress up too much for stuff like this but don't go with jeans because that's NOT GOOD.. above jeans, you don't NEED a tie, but you won't look out of place with a tie. very very nice choice of opera. you will have lots of fun.
Whoever told that there was an specific dress code for music? Enjoy the music, that's all you need! Your perspective and thinkings are more important that the disguise you use! I used to attend symphonic concerts with sneakers, jeans and a t-shirt. I enjoy music, that's what matters.
