Why do barber shops have those turning, striped swirly things outside their shop?

Does anyone know why? Or the story behind these things?

Thanks. Why do barber shops have those turning, striped swirly things outside their shop?
Barbers used to perform some types of surgery. The red signifies blood and the white signifies bandages. Why do barber shops have those turning, striped swirly things outside their shop?

barbers used to hang their cloths with blood on outside to dry and they used to twirl around in the wind

Represents blood running down an arm. Barbers used to perform ';medical bloodletting'; which was thought to bring down fevers, etc.
