How to get thinner hair cut at a barber's?

I usually go to a barber for a haircut, and although I always tell him to 'cut my hair to make it look thinner', it doesn't really work much.

1) Is it because thinning out a hair with a scissors doesn't help much?

2) what's a thinning scissors?

3)Does layering one's hair make it look thicker or thinner? How to get thinner hair cut at a barber's?
1)Thinning hair in areas where it is too thick is a part of every haircut. Your barber thins your hair for the style he cuts it. You might want it to look thinner after it has grown out, but it doesn't work like that because by that time the thinned hair has started to grow back.

2)Thinning scissors either have a blade of one side and what looks like a metal comb on the other or what looks like a metal comb on both sides.

The hair that goes between the teeth of the comb does not get cut so the hair is thinned since the hair that gets caught between the ends of the teeth, or the ends of the teeth and the blade is cut.

3)Layering the hair simply means cutting the hair in a certain area of the head the same length by pulling the hair away from the scalp and cutting it. Therefore when the hair lays flat on the head the cut ends of the hair do not line up and multiple layers are formed according to where the hair is on the head, since it was all cut the same length. Alternatively, when the hair is cut as it lays on the head, so the cut ends all come to the same place on he head, effectively, the hair in a certain area of the scalp is all cut different lengths. For guy's medium length styles, layering usually makes the hair look thicker, because when it isn't layered, the barber usually has to thin the hair to make it lay correctly on the top of the head.

Thick hair is ideal for regular taper cuts, and the short pomp styles-crew cut, ivy league(long crew cut), flat top crew cut. A good barber can design one of these styles to fully suit almost any young guy's head shape, face and neck shape, frontal hairline and facial features.

Some barbers describe an ivy league as a crew cut just long enough to be parted and combed to the side, if so desired. An ivy league can also be worn with the hair brushed up off the forehead to form the short pomp front, or with the short bangs brushed down on the forehead like a forward brush cut.

Grooming any of the short pomp styles- crew cut, ivy league, flat top crew cut- is basically the same and takes about a minute or two.

1) Towel dry hair.

2) Barely dip fingertips in jar of wax.

3)Transfer wax to palms.

4) Smooth palms over hair.

5)Brush hair off forehead to form short pomp front.

Whichever style you decide on, be sure to take a photo to help describe the desired haircut to the barber or stylist. If you need more photos of any of the above styles let me know.

Good Luck!
