Clipper guards are numbered in eighths of an inch.

A #5 Clipper Guard cuts hair to a length of 5/8';.

Unless you are going for a butch, clippers to the scalp should not be the method used to cut the top. The best barbers don't use numbers except maybe on the lower to mid back and sides. Strictly free hand or clipper/shears over comb/finger. Describe the style of haircut you would like and the approximate lengths you would like the haircut to be on the back, sides, top and front. Also describe how you want the edge of the hair around the ear arches( natural feather edge or hard outlined edge) and at the nape(tapered or blocked, and rounded off or squared), and how far you want the sideburns to extend down the ear. A photograph helps a barber by showing him the style you want. Some times the same words describe quite different variations of haircut to different barbers. Everything you could possibly want to know about Guard and Blade numbers is available at the last link below.
