I haven't been to the barber in years and the last time I went my dad told the barber what type of haircut, I was like 12 years old at the time and now I am 17.
Anyways a friend of mine said you tell them how much to cut off from what part. So for example, would I ask for a 3 on the top and have it fade down to a 1 as he cuts the hair down?

You can tell him that or a 1 on the sides and 3 on top. A 3 would not leave you much hair to work with. You would look more like a tapered tennis ball with these lengths. I would ask for finger length on top and one on the sides. Decide weather you want a high or low fade. (where the two lengths meet) and tell him that the rest he can figure out or ask you the simple questions he needs to know. Best not to put in too many words of your own. Best to describe how you like it. Let him decide how it needs to be done.
